With the development of society, more and more importance has been attached to English education.Reading, as an effective approach to enrich students’humanism accomplishment and to improve students’English integrated applied abilities, has received more and more attention in recent years.It can be proved by English Curricular Standard in the Phase of Compulsory Education issued by China Ministry of Education in2011which proposes to strengthen the English Teaching and provides that the basic purpose of middle school English reading teaching is to cultivate student’s independent reading ability and equip them with effective reading methods and skills.Reading, as a way of language study, is generally regarded as a main means for people to acquire knowledge and communicate with the outside world.However, because of ignorance of reading skills and strategies, and lack of good reading habits and rich cultural background knowledge of western countries, the rural junior high school students’English reading ability has been backward, and there exist in general the difficulties among them.Based on Effective Teaching Theory, Second Language Acquisition Theory, Schematic Theory and Theory of Language Context, and taking as an example XieQiao Town Junior High School of Yingshang County in Fuyang City of Anhui Province, this study aims to describe the overall English reading teaching situation in rural area, analyze the reasons to limit the development of the rural junior middle school students’reading ability, and provide the effective strategies to improve their ability.The study employs literature review and questionnaire analysis as research methods.English Teachers and students of XieQiaoTown Junior High School have been chosen as the objects of the questionnaire.This thesis consists of five chapters.The first chapter shows the background of the research, the purpose and significance of the study, research methods, and the thesis frame.Chapter Two introduces the theoretical foundations and the research literature which discusses the research situation both at home and abroad.At the same time, the author analyzes two versions of English Curriculum Standards which were enacted by China’s Ministry of Education.Through processing the data obtained from the questionnaires and analyzing the results of them, the writer in Chapter Three expounds the factors that limit the development of the rural junior middle school students’reading ability.In the fourth chapter, some suggestions are made to improve the rural middle school students’reading ability.The last chapter is the conclusion of the study.
