The Research On The Effectiveness Of English Newspaper Reading In Junior High School English Reading Teaching

In accordance with new “National English Curriculum Standard”, it is one of the crucial tasks for English course to enable students to develop good learning habits and effective learning strategies. In recent years, national English exams have also improved the demands on students’ reading comprehension to a larger extent. English newspaper reading has been recognized widely in China as an effective way for English reading learning up to now. However, the focus of study is still in senior high schools and colleges instead of junior high schools, which needs to be paid great attention to as well. This paper aims to research and verify the feasibility and effectiveness of English newspaper reading in junior high school through English newspaper reading teaching.The experimental subjects are 75 junior high school students in Class 6,Grade 3 of Bayannaoer No.2 Middle School of Inner Mongolia to accept English newspaper teaching for four months, and the reference objects are 75 junior high school students in Class 4, Grade 3 of the same school to accept normal English teaching. The experiment process consists of pre-test, the implementation of English newspaper reading teaching and post-test, in addition to the questionnaires, the self-evaluation sheets and face-to-face interview as supplementary research. The results of the experiment indicate that English newspaper reading is indeed helpful in enriching students’ background knowledge and developing the use of reading strategies, and thus improving their reading comprehension.Despite some shortcomings in methods of this study, it can still provide certain enlightenment and inspiration on junior high school English teaching.At last, there are two points of suggestions: 1. Reinforce research on Englishnewspaper teaching mode and activities to enhance its combination with daily English teaching; 2. Advocate teamwork teaching mode and task-based teaching mode.
