Chinese characters are the carrier of China language culture, and also the indispensable teaching content of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Also, the Chinese character teaching has always been the important and difficult content in the study of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. For the American students, who are with the background of the non-Chinese characters culture, the Chinese character is a new writing system with the combination of the Chinese characters’ shape, pronunciation and meaning. No matter from the view of shape, pronunciation, meaning or the relationship among the three, the Chinese characters are so far from their national phonetic writing, and the America students will inevitably be affected by the negative transfer of mother tongue in the learning process of Chinese characters, and their Chinese characters learning effect is not optimistic. During the practice of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and the communication with American students, the author also found that learners’ Chinese character writing level is not commensurate with their reading level, and their writing level is far less than the required standard of HSK. Their Chinese characters writing still have many problems. In the study of teaching Chinese characters to the foreigners, especially the quantity of the study on Chinese characters writing problem is less, and the teaching of developing writing skills is also not too much.In order to improve America students’ Chinese character writing skill and help them accurately and comprehensively mastering the Chinese characters, this paper embarks from the view of the Chinese characters and the learners, and meanwhile makes a thorough inquiry on the two aspects of subjective and objective which are involved in Chinese characters writing. First this paper explores from the Chinese characters themselves, and also explores the writing problem from the respect of Chinese characters’ motivation and component. Based on this, this paper analyzes the problem and the root of the Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language problem, and also the phenomenon of American students’ Chinese character writing errors. Through a questionnaire and semi-structured interview, this paper makes an analysis of the writing errors’ reason from the learners’ perspective. And supplemented by the contrast between the English and Chinese characters, in order to explore the deep Influential factors that the writing system’ differences make. Therefore, based on the America students’ Chinese characters writing problem and the characteristics of Chinese character, this paper proposes to set up a special Chinese characters course, and puts forward some suggestions for the foreign Chinese character teaching.
