China boasts a large number of nations, each of which bears a long history and adistinct conventional artistic culture. Taking Dongba painting of the Naxi in Lijiangfor example, this paper makes an analysis from such perspectives as geographicalenvironment, historical development and artistic features and meanwhile tries tointegrate excellent art and cultural traditions into teaching at local schools so as tofind solutions to problems existing in the current arts teaching. Based on a carefulanalysis of new curriculum reform of fine arts, advantages of print teaching andcommon grounds of Dongba painting and printmaking, the paper uses a newcomprehensive engraving as a carrier and designs and implements a teaching programsuitable for local students. Besides, with the combination of Dongba paintingresources and printmaking courses at junior high school, this program allows studentsto discover and taste artistic effects brought by different materials and be furtherexposed to nature as well as the remarkable traditional folk culture, which wouldaccordingly cultivate their abilities to find, enjoy and create beauty and enhance theirpassion for cultural heritage and also strengthen their awareness of protecting andinheriting cultural traditions.The teaching reform based on the integration of Dongba paiting and artcurriculum at junior high school stimulates students’ interest in learning fine arts,fosters their hands-on capacity as well as human spirit and improves theircomprehensive aesthetic qualities; in turn, it also strengthens teachers’ abilities andprovides some experience for their counterparts in remote areas.
