The purpose of this thesis was to ascertain the development status andcharacteristics in young children’s cognition of geometric figures aging from3to6years old.120subjects were randomly selected from the kindergartens in Dalian, among which40children was chosen from each age. On the basis of domestic andforeign research tools home and abroad, the test to assess young children’s cognitionof geometric figures was compiled as the Scale of3-6Years Old Children’s GeometricCognitive Developmental Survey. Experimental research method was the mainmethod used in this research in the form of individual interview. Meanwhileobservation of young children’s response and operation process in the whole test wasalso recorded. The research examined young children’s cognition of geometric figuresby means of Descriptive Statistics; the naming and recognizing ability, theconservative ability, the composing ability, the ability to understand of the basicfeatures and relationship of the real life by the means of Descriptive Statistics andCorrelation Analysis. The implication of the research was also revealed. Results show that: First, the cognition of geometric figures is increasing with thegrowth of age and the effects of age are remarkable. The number of recognizinggeometric figures gets more and the solid geometrical thinking is further developed.Second, young children develop the cognition of geometric figures from theperception of external characteristics to naming the figure by the process of matching, identifying and naming. What is more, the level of identifying is higher than that ofnaming. There is a forward transfer between the study of planimetry and the study ofgeometry. Third, home education plays an important role in the study of geometricfigures. Young children may promote their knowledge in geometry by the guidance oftheir parents, operating geometric toys, watching related TV programs and so on.Fourth, comparing with the previous research results, the examinees exceed theprevious children of the same age in the number and accuracy of recognizing figures.
