For a long time, people have taken it for granted one-sidedly that reading is just connected with Chinese learning and the responsibilities of Chinese teachers, and popular science mainly refers to the learning and reading of the knowledge of natural science, while mathematics learning does not need popular science reading. Therefore, in the process of teaching and learning mathematics, there is a serious lack of math popular science reading. However, mathematics reading especially math popular science reading that serves as an effective extension of mathematics classroom teaching not only contributes to the development of students’mathematics accomplishment, but also is valuable and significant for students to learn mathematics.This research mainly adopts the method of action research, and provides the practical guideline for students’mathematical popular science reading from the perspective of inside and outside of the class. In order to ensure the pertinence, validity and reasonability of the practice and research, this paper first conducted the realistic interviews with students, teachers and parents in the primary school. And then it studied the statistics from the online bookstore users’feedback of two famous websites, namely, dangdang.com and Amazon, and analyzed the recommendation to popular science experts and reading organizations, and found that math popular science reading has great value and significance on activating students reading interest, developing their thinking ability of mathematics, changing and transforming their mathematics learning pattern, and expanding their mathematical knowledge; science experts and many powerful organizations highly recommend this method; teachers, students and parents in reality haven’t fully understand the importance of math popular science reading, and math popular science reading lacks effective guidance and relevant excellent books.Based on the investigation and analysis of current math popular science reading situation of primary school students, this paper carried out the action research in terms of two levels of the recommended reading course guidance in class and students’extra-curricular reading by combining with the actual mathematics teaching situation of primary school. The following conclusions have been drawn through the observation of students in the implementation of action, and the analysis of the teachers and parents’interviews and student’work:1. Math popular science reading effectively stimulates the students’interest of learning mathematics reading, and improving the students’thinking ability in mathematics and their mathematical literacy training in and out of the class.2. Math popular science reading requires teachers to have a planned guide reading. Math teachers can guide students in terms of the reading materials and reading methods, thus avoiding them to read aimlessly, which plays a positive role to the healthy development of students’mathematical knowledge learning, and physical and mental health and their personalities.3. Through the practical guidance action of math popular science reading, teachers and parents can enhance the understanding of math popular science reading.In the light of the main problems in the implementation, some relevant suggestions and enlightenments were put forward from the perspective of teachers, school and family. Finally, this paper explored the weak points in this action research, and then raised some issues that we should pay attention to when guiding primary school students’math popular science reading in the future.
