In recent years, the complementary education has become a significant phenomenon which can’t be ignored. Facing various complementary educations without standards and strict rules, researchers feel confused and can never get to what is really important, which may somewhat explain why the study of complementary education has always been marginalized. However, the marginalization of theoretical study meets the lack of national policy, which offers a relatively free space for the development of complementary education. Nothing can develop without the combined effect of environment and itself, complementary is also not an exception. Usually we can get a clear understanding of the whole with the help of a typical case."New Oriental" is a typical complementary education, the favor it received may be a epitome of "complementary education heat". This paper describes the current situation of "New Oriental" and mainly focused on the study of how "New Oriental" caters to the social demands. And then, it comes back to institutionalized education, searching for the common points and reflecting the current educational needs.Surrounded by various exams and driven by symbolic consumption, we feel highly anxious facing lots of risks, all of which featured the modern society, providing strong supports for the development of complementary education:living in an exam-oriented society, people are occupied with various exams, searching for the easy way to success; Facing a risk society, people feel highly anxious, being forced to arm themselves, while education has become one of the equipments against risk. People are receiving more and more education, which devalued itself, To cope with risks, people have to look for other approaches to getting more "capital"; Lost in the fever of consumption society, products are supplied far exceeded than material needs, while symbolic consumption gradually prevail. Education has become a typical case, it manifests its taste by its brand、the setting of course and even the choosing of address. What matters is not only the education itself, but also the additional value it brings and the act of receiving education."New Oriental" takes full advantage of these new features:in view of mass infatuation about brand,"New Oriental" constructs its own education brand with high recognition. Guided by the idea of "severing for exams" and "crash teaching", it displays its taste in high profile with the help of the media and eye-catching area, besides, the courses are aimed at various exams directly and also meet the need of status symbol. That is, most of the courses are set according to various exams, besides, the same courses are divided into different levels to enable people get the sense of superiority. In this way,"New Oriental" has catered to the social needs, creating a "legend". Living in current society, enjoying process has been a luxury, while going after the feeling of speed has become a helpless choice. The fast growth of complementary education can be seen from "New Oriental". On the other hand, adhering to the rule of "speed first", the institutionalized education has been developing. Their common development reflects that the education demand is increasing, or even become excessive, behind which is the increase of educational status and the transformation of educational direction. However, sometimes the excessive demand remains unmet, or expected result doesn’t appear, all of which bring much stigma to education:from experts’ criticism to after-dinner speaking, it seems that everybody can say something about it. In China, the slogan of alleviating the burden on students has been put up with for so many years, but in vain. Maybe before doing this, we should alleviate the burden on education itself. If too much hope is placed on education, we just feel that education is useless.
