The closing part is an indispensable part of a complete class teaching. As we all know, a good beginning in teaching makes a lesson more successful, and the same is with a well-designed closing, which undoubtedly contributes a lot to the success of a complete class teaching. The study involves3junior high schools in Nanjing (Ninghai middle school, NO.29middle school and Nanjing Foreign Language School). The writer tries to explore the current situation of summary in English teaching through class observation and investigation. In addition, she designs the theory-based teaching methods based on different class types.Through these surveys, the writer finds out some problems in the closing parts:1. Lack of closing part due to the inappropriate arrangements of class hour;2. Lack of variety in teaching methods (teachers often apply " read aloud" or " listen and repeat" in the closing parts);3. Lack of initiative position for the students(teachers often control the whole parts);4. Lack of sum-ups except for "knowledge summary"(namely teachers/students sum up the knowledge they teach/learn, such as language points.);5. Lack of variety in classroom language(instructions in English is the most common)Reasons for these phenomena are various, and they can be classified into two categories:1. Subjective reasons:such as teachers’inappropriate understanding of closing or teachers’bad teaching habits, etc.2. Objective reasons:such as students’bad behavior in class or shortage of class hour, etc.In a word, if teachers want to organize an effective closing, they should analyze their own problems in the closing part carefully and apply appropriate teaching strategies, then chose the teaching methods which suit their closing best.
