Civic consciousness is the core quality of modern citizens. The realization of the grand objective that building a prosperous, democratic, civilized modern socialist country must be based on the improvement of national civic consciou sness. High school students are on the significant stage of developing world vi ew, life outlook and values, thus the cultivation of their civic consciousness ha s an important and far-reaching impact on the improvement of nation civic con sciousness and promoting socialist modernization as well. School is the main fr ont of civic consciousness cultivation, while ideological and political course has a direct and close connection with civic consciousness cultivation because of i ts specificity in curriculum objectives, contents and implementations. Therefore cultivating the students’ civic consciousness in ideological and political course i s feasible and meaningful.This thesis inquires into the essence of civic consciousness by reviewing th e historical evolution of citizenship and the forming process of civic conscious ness. It makes clear the connotation and content component of civic consciousn ess. The Questionnaire investigation result shows that the status of high school students’civic consciousness is weak, which is mainly reflected in low civic consciousness recognition, lack of belief in the value of modern democracy an d the will of active practice, and inconsistency between words and deeds. Whil e the civic consciousness cultivation in ideological and political course is confr onted with the problems like the teachers’ weak civic consciousness and low t heoretical attainment, vagueness of cultivation objectives and contents, and inap propriate methods as well. Historical and cultural reasons, social reality reasons and education reasons cause the weak status of civic consciousness cultivation. The thesis systematically explores the principles, objectives and teaching meth ods from the perspective of curriculum teaching.
