Institution Building In The Asean Region In The Process Of Governance

ASEAN has made great achievements in regional governance. Economically, economic cooperation has been strengthened among member countries, and living standard of ASEAN people has been improved. Politically, previous tensions among some member countries have been relaxed, regional order has been constructed, and regional resilience has been improved. Therefore, it's meaningful to research the governance of ASEAN. This thesis begins with the concept of governance and regional governance, and then it goes into that why and how ASEAN realizes the regional governance.The first part of my thesis mainly discusses the reasons and aims of ASEAN governance, pointing that disorder is the main reason and constructing ASEAN community is the target. The second part mainly elaborates the institutional structure of ASEAN including operation mechanism, "ASEAN way" and "Track Two" diplomacy. The third part summarizes the characteristics of the institutions of ASEAN which is a comprehensive and multi-level system with equality and informality. The forth part proves that the institutions of ASEAN effectively realize regional governance from the aspects of functions of institutions and the results. At last, the conclusion is that the success of regional governance does not depend on the strictness or constraint force of institutions but lies on that the institutions must suit for the region's characteristics and development.
