Civil Society And China's Modernization

Culture is the stable way of living which was formed historically. The connotation of civil society is the inner free and conscious way of living of human being. Only the realization of total change of the way of living from traditional argricultural civilization to the modern citizen society would make China a modern country.Concerning this topic, this thesis firstly systematically clarified the multiple meanings of citizen society-political,economic,ideological and so on, to analyse the deep-seated cultural connotation of the way of living in the new philosophical and cutural perspective. Then the author analysed the forming conditions of civil society in detail, and emphatically demonstrated the surpport effect of citizen society to modernization; and lastly, by concisely reviewing the process of modernization in China in more than 100 years, the author found out the deep-seated reason for the lag the pace of modernization in China. The fundemental reason for the lag was that the citizen society (citizen class,civil culture and so on) has never been propped up and developped in China,and there was no fundemental change in the way of living. Focusing on this fundemental reason, the author pointed out in Chapter III that reconstruction of the citizen society, realizing the total change of culture,and changing the way of living of Chinese fundementally were the key to the modernization of China, and discussed the coherent measures to recontruct the way of living emphatically.
