Chinese herbs and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has thousands of years of history and has been used widely in China and pan-Chinese culture regions. It is well received for its effectiveness and reasonable cost. The contribution of the TCM to human civilization is as great as the Western medicine, but it is not receiving the similar recognition it deserves. There are many reasons for the lack of recognition in the TCM, such as culture, science, administration and so on. With the opening of Chinese market after joining WTO, TCM industry is facing the same challenge as other Chinese industries from the foreign competitors. The issue to advance TCM and to improve its competitive ability in the Chinese market, as well as in global pharmaceutical markets has to be in the mind of everyone involved in the TCM industry. This thesis describes the globalization of TCM and analyzes the competitive markets of TCM industry. Borrowing experiences from Japan and Korea, the advantages and disadvantages of TCM industry in China and worldwide market are discussed. The problems faced by the globalization of Chinese TCM industries are analyzed. Three aspects of TCM globalization are suggested in enterprise, profession and government. Additionally, the thesis employs real industrial data, uses the viewpoint from the industry, utilizes the strategic management of the industry and marketing management, and combines the knowledge from the globalization of the industry to explore the possible solution for the globalization of TCM industry. This is a multi-facet examination of the TCM industry organizational structure, combination of sales and marketing, and capital investment. To promote the development of TCM is not only a single industry or individual's responsibility, but also a major concern for the whole industry development. It has deep influence on the daily life of ordinary people. It can also be a contribution of Chinese to the whole world.Being a participant of the TCM industry, we have the responsibility and obligation to increase the research and development of TCM. We need to overcome the insufficiency of TCM with scientific approach, to employ scientific language for TCM terminology, and to use scientific tools for TCM development. We need to improve TCM with the modern manufacture process, planting, marketing, and management, to continue work on the improvement of TCM and to break the bottle neck of progress. Our generation should work hard on TCM development and have the grand vision to push TCM into the international market.
