In 1972,China and Japan normalized the diplomatic relations between the two countries. The normalization lays a political foundation for the lasting, steady, healthy and all-round development of and ushers in a broad prospect for the friendly relations between the two countries. And this has been tested and verified by the great achievements obtained during the 30 years since 1972. However, while being surprised and gratified at the unprecedentedly innumerable achievements in the scope of friendly relations, we must, in the meanwhile, notice that behind the main trend of friendliness there still surges a hostile undercurrent, namely, the relation between the two countries sometimes doesn't turn out as we wished. For example, in recent years, hostile events such as falsifying historical textbooks and paying respects to Jingguo Shrine etc. occurred time and again. These events have extremely hurt the national feelings of Chinese people and tremendously held up the healthy and smooth development of Sino-Japan diplomatic relations. Therefore, to probe it to the root, we find the main problem is that people hi the two countries hold different opinions on the history of Japanese Aggression against China during World War II (i.e. views on the Second World War). At present, much attention has been devoted to the problem by the academic circles and extensive studies have been carried out. Most of the studies have focused on the manifestations of the divergence of views but few have mentioned the reasons of the divergence, the effects caused by the divergence and even the countermeasures for eliminating the divergence. For this reason, the author, on the basis of a full and accurate data, intends to make a tentative study on the problem and the discussion will be a many-sided one, it will involve in history, reality, cultural consciousness and insular geography of the country etc.The paper will consist of two parts: foreword and main body. Some Japanese also hold a correct historical point of view, i.e. they hold identicalviews on the history of World War II as Chinese people do. So in the foreword, the author will give a wide coverage to the discussion of the correct historical views held by those upright Japanese. However, as the title suggests, the paper will mainly intend to probe into the divergence of Chinese and Japanese people' s views on the history of World War II, so in the main body part, the author will mainly expound different understanding of the history held by people in the two countries. Four parts will be included in the main body part. Part One describes the manifestations of the divergence. People in the two countries look at the history of World War II differently. They have different understandings of the nature of the war, the responsibility of the war, the crime of the war and hold different views on Japan's distortion of historical textbooks and its paying respects to Jingguo Shrine. Part Two probes into the reasons for the existing of the divergence. Many reasons will be given here: historical reasons, practical reasons, cultural consciousness of the people and insular geography of the country etc. Part There points out the effects caused by the divergence. The existence of the divergence exerts great influence on China, Japan, Asian-Pacific Area and even the Whole World. In Part Four, the author tries to put forward some countermeasures for the elimination of the divergence. According to the author, both China and Japan should take positive measures to eliminate the divergence. In a word, in this paper, with the all-round and systematic study of the difference of opinions on the history of World War II between China and Japan, the author attempts to find a key to solve the problem so as to do some contribution to the enduring stable and healthy development of the friendly relations between the two countries.
