By establishing a closed corpus of modern Chinese by the modern Chinese literary works from 1919 to the end of 20th century written in typical oral Chinese, and establishing a closed corpus of ancient Chinese based on the study of signified features of"long"and"short"in modern Chinese by selecting the ancient Chinese literature written by typical oral Chinese in the various periods of ancient Chinese, we take the pair words of"long"(Chang) and"short"(Duan) as the study target. Describing the signified features of"long"and"short"in modern Chinese, and added a historical survey, we want to construct the systematic properties of"long"and"short"in modern Chinese, and generalize its regularity.The article is divided into four chapters.Chapter I, Introduction. This chapter accounts of the origin of topics– the researches of common words, summarizes the studies of"long"and"short", and proposes the study objectives, its significance and research methods. The last is the key.Chapter II, The signified features of"long"and"short"in modern Chinese. We first divide the referents of"long"and"short"into over 10 small categories, and then divide them into simple referents and complex referents in terms of form. We present the distribution of the small categories of"long"and"short"in tabular form in the three stages of "1919-1948", "1949-1978", and"1979-the end of 20th century". By a comparative analysis in both longitudinal and transverse aspects, we describe the signified features of"long"and"short"in modern Chinese.Chapter III, A historical survey of"long"and"short". We establish a closed corpus of ancient Chinese Based on the study of signified features of"long"and"short"in modern Chinese by selecting the ancient Chinese literature written by typical oral language in the various periods of ancient Chinese according to the dynasty order. Referring to the description methods of modern Chinese, we describe the historical evolution of"long"and"short".Chapter IV, Conclusion. In this part, we try to summarize the synchronic and diachronic situation of"long"and"short", combined with the related thoughts of cognitive linguistics. We briefly discuss the related phenomena of"long"and"short", and outline the systematical properties of"long"and"short"in modern Chinese. We also propose some problems and reflections in the study.
