Song dynasties witnessed almost 1,500 poets creating poems amounting to more than 20,000. Owing to their mysterious music and complicated rhythms, those poems attracted much attention of Chinese people from one generation to another. Chinese ancient music, as an essential part of ancient human civilization, has been playing a very important role in the history of civilization. Chinese musical instruments, being the major carriers of music, are the essence and treasure of Chinese civilization.In Song dynasty, Ci is a form of literature in nature with characteristics of music. Music has close relationship with the rise and prosperity of ci. National instruments, as the ingredient of music, are beloved by a great many poets, therefore, they are often used in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》. Many studies have been done on musical instruments from the perspective of musicology, and the thesis is to give a full and detailed statistical study of the instruments and the allusions about instruments in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》from the literary viewpoint. On the basis of statistical studies, the thesis analyses the causes and effect, as well as their influence.The thesis consists of four parts. The first chapter gives introduction to the studies people have done on the musical instruments in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》, and the methodology, as well as the significance and the purpose of the thesis. The standard and the definitions of some concepts are also presented for the sake of systematical analysis of the thesis.The second chapter briefly introduces the standard and its history of classifying musical instruments, besides, this part also gives a detailed name of instruments in Song dynasty. What's more, this chapter gives the number of ci as well as allusions concerning instruments in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》. The top five musical instruments are:the drum with its number of 687, the flute (xiao) 628, di 571, sheng 542, guqin 479. The thesis gives further analysis of those instruments and the allusions frequently referred to in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》The third chapter tries to argue the reason why there are such large number of instruments and allusions in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》. There are as many factors as following:the influence of Chinese liyue,jiaofang, goulan, wasi, and that of the singer girls, musical literature, as well as the bloom of commerce and the ethnic assimilation. A detailed analysis is offered of these factors.The fourth chapter mainly discusses the effect of instruments on ci, such as on its creation, the style and the spreading.For a long time, there have been continuous studies on the relationship between ci and music, while that in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》are rarely studied. The thesis makes use of several methods including archival research, textual analysis, classification statistics, and tables, so as to make a systematical analysis of musical instruments in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》. The special significance of the thesis lies in its study on the instruments and allusions in songci from the literary aspect. Besides, the thesis tries to give a full analysis of the usage of instruments in《Complete Collection of Song Ci Poetry》through reasoning of its causes and its influence on the writing, style and spreading of songci.
