As an elite of knowledge class in Meiji era of Japan, Natsume Soseki had been trying to find a reasonable personality for Japanese people who span from traditional feudal period into the modern society.He also attempted to design a way to realize reasonable personality under the condition of mutual references between east and west civilization. Self-awakening was an unchangeable theme in his whole life.In early works,he was indignant to malformed society and execrable national character,and criticized suppressive civilization and self-shadowing of people.In medium term,he explored the predicament of love to reveal the significant meaning of social self-awakening,but he went to an unsolved tragedy.In late time,he abandoned "self-based" thought critically and brought forward "follow heaven and eliminate selfishness".Thus, self-awakening became illusory and unreal.Form above narratation,we can say that Natsume Soseki had been insisting the self-awakening of modern times, showing the noble demeanor.The reason why he failed in exploration was that free personality and moral constraints in the Eastern and Western civilizations collision have not been perfect integration and creative problem solving.Domestic research community has not elaborated the theme of self-awakening in Natsume Soseki's works in detail.The researchers have different opinion of it,so it indeedly need research deeply.This essay trys to investigate self-awakening that was the theme of Meiji era,and points out Natsume Soseki's thoughts about it.Through his minds can we make out the difficulty of social self-awakening in Japan.In the movement of enlightenment for Japanese modern society,his influence is too large,making him great pioneer.His thoughts also direct self-awakening of the Japanese society after the second world war.
