Literary quotation, which is named "using allusion" by the ancient people, is a method for writing. With the slowly development of literary criticism, the literary quotation has no independent status. Nowadays, the scholars would like to study it from the perspective of rhetoric device, which is within the rhetoric field. Until the 20th century, with the foundation and introduction of various linguistic theories, people gradually study the literary quotation within modern linguistics, and achieve results. However, most researchers only study the literary quotation from one perspective, which is lack of the systemic method. The building of systemic theory also needs the depth and breadth of the various specific studies, which serves as the basis for the present study.The materials the author selected are from the Collection of the Epitaph of Tang Dynasty in the Tianbao reign of the Tang Dynasty. From the definition of the literary quotation, the author decides the scope of the present study. Firstly, the author puts an emphasis on the dynamic process of the literary quotation, and then the author makes a static analysis of the already formed literary quotation from the perspective of structure, meaning, pragmatics and psychology respectively. Based on these analyses, the author makes a conclusion. At last, the thesis talks about the advantage and disadvantage of using allusions.Research method:1. The present thesis has both the static description and dynamic analysis. With an emphasis on the formation and dynamic application, the thesis also analyzes the structure and semantic features.2. The language study is connected with social culture, historical backgrounds and psychology. The thesis studies the formation and application within the society, from which backgrounds of the linguistics, culture history and psychology can be revealed.3. the combination of the unearthed materials and the materials handed down from ancient times. Since the materials within a specific period are limited, the author also uses the handed down materials for the present study.With the epitaph of Tang dynasty as the study materials, the author studies the literary quotation within a specific period and analyzes them systemically, from which the characters and general rules are drawn. Thus, the present study provides a basis for the foundation of the literary quotation theory, which is the characteristic of the thesis. Besides, the thesis studies the historical evaluation of the literary quotation, character of the Epitaph, situation of the ancient vocabulary and people's cultural psychology of the Tang dynasty, which can provide references for the researchers accordingly. Meanwhile, the thesis also has the material and mathematical values to the perfection of the Chinese dictionaries and the collection of the unearthed materials.
