The aims of this dissertation is to study the ambassadors' situation of being sent on diplomatic missions, the characteristics of their official positions, the quality of the ambassador group, the effect of going abroad as an envoy as well as the influence that the complex environment of international politics had on sending ambassadors in Northern Song Dynasty. Through these studies, people can know the ambassadors in Northern Song Dynasty comprehensively and systematically, which results in revealing the multiplex tendency of sending ambassadors in Northern Song Dynasty. The main contents are as follows:First, investigate the historical background where the ambassadors in Northern Song Dynasty were and their composition. Through counting the ambassadors' information who went to Liao Dynasty, Jin Dynasty, Korea and Western Xia, I analyze the proportion of their official positions, the distribution of their ranks, the situation of borrowing higher official positions as well as their diplomatic missions. I also probe into the characteristics of sending ambassadors abroad in Northern Song Dynasty on the basis of comparing them from different points of view.Second, investigate the ambassadors' quality and capacity in a comprehensive through studying their representatives on the basis of analyzing the data comprehensively and systematically. The quality includes family background, professional abilities, personalities and the ability of handling foreign affairs, revealing the basic quality that the ambassadors should possess.Third, investigate the effect that the ambassadors made when they did diplomatic missions in practice by maintaining normally bilateral relations, signing treaties as well as containing multilateral relations successively. I reveal the gradational, flexible and successive characteristics of sending ambassadors in Northern Song Dynasty by discussing in the three-dimensional way which is to combine the people with the events and the history.In short, this dissertation reflects the multiplex tendency of sending ambassadors in Northern Song Dynasty and the enormous contributions they made when they were implementing the foreign policies by analyzing the quality of the ambassador group and the effect of their going abroad comprehensively.
