Eastern Western Monthly Magazine which was initiated by a German missionary Guo Shi-li and published in Guangzhou in 1833 is regarded as the first journal published in China. This magazine introduced a lot of knowledge, including the history of China and the West, geography, journalism, astronomy, art, science, technology, business market, politics and law etc in the West. It has been regarded as precious materials in the study of the history of Chinese modern history of the press and Chinese and Western culture exchange. However, our study looks at Eastern Western Monthly Magazine as a kind of precious material in the study of the history of Chinese language learning and spreading.Up to now, the studies of the missionaries' Chinese book and literature which were conducted from the history of Chinese language learning and communication are still in the early stage, and they usually fall into two aspects. On the one hand, scholars usually try to find and organize the development and history clue of Chinese learning and teaching in Ming and Qing Dynasties on the aspect of teachers, textbooks, dictionaries, official language policies and so on. On the other hand, they often use linguistical method to study the contribution of the missionaries' Chinese work on the voice, grammar, vocabulary of Modern Chinese. There are few studies of Chinese learners' level of study and application.The articles in Eastern Western Monthly Magazine were written by foreign missionaries and reflected their level of learning and use of Chinese language and culture. Our study has three objects. First, we'd like to research missionaries' survey of learning of Chinese language and culture and their level of use of Chinese from this magazine. Second, we will try to find out what kind of influence had this magazine brought to our language.The Chinese learning of Eastern Western Monthly Magazine's editor covered three areas, philosophy, history and literature. Not only can they use Chinese to write average articles, but also they can write Chinese metrical poems and novels which imitated the narrative form of chapter style novel in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Except traditional novel's features, these novels also inherited the features of The Conversation between Two Friends of Zhang Yuan written by a missionary Mi Lian in which there were lots of conversations in it. Therefore, novels in Eastern Western Monthly Magazine enhanced the impact of chapter style novel with lots of conversation in it. As the first journal published in China, the style of comments and news in Eastern Western Monthly Magazine played an active role to guide the development of modern press comments and news. In addition, Eastern Western Monthly Magazine invented a large number of new words to Modern Chinese, which involved the following area, astronomy, geography, political, economic, judicial, education, animal etc.
