There has been a historical process before LIHECI(离合词) come into being. With the turning from single-syllabic words to double-syllabic or polysyllabic words, free morphemes also have changed into non-free morphemes. This is a gradual process, which can't be accomplished immediately. Thus, there will be a great number of morphemes lying between free morphemes and non-free morphemes, which have the nature of both. So the combinations of this kind of morphemes have the nature of words and phrases, which we call LIHECI(离合词). This article is divided into three chapters except preface and conclusion.Preface. We recall the main achievement of grammatical scholars'study on modern Chinese LIHECI(离合词) from the aspects of LIHECI's(离合词) definition, classification, characteristics, causes of separation and combination, standards of definition, forming causes and application.The first chapter: The definition and classification of modern Chinese LIHECI(离合词). In this chapter, we mainly analyze the characteristics of LIHECI(离合词) from the integration of meaning, separability of form and double functions; define LIHECI(离合词) by using the method of separation and combining form and meaning; and we also divide LIHECI(离合词) into three categories: v+o, s+v, and v+c.The second chapter: The relationship between the morphemes which form a LIHECI(离合词).The morphemes which form LIHECI(离合词) have specific characteristics. In this chapter, we study on the contributing factor and forming mechanism of LIHECI(离合词) from morphemes'aspect. We believe that the morphemes which form LIHECI(离合词) are on the continuum from non-free morphemes to free morphemes. They can't be included into category of non-free morphemes or free morphemes. Thus the LIHECI(离合词) which are formed by this kind of morphemes can be expanded. There is at least one coral morpheme in each LIHECI(离合词), which stands for some meanings. These meanings dominate the classification which is shown out by non-coral morpheme, thus we have the complete meanings and classification of one LIHECI(离合词).The third chapter: The syntactic function of LIHECI(离合词) when they are used separately and together. LIHECI(离合词) and the forms after their separated have different characteristics in syntactic function. In this chapter we systematically analyze the syntactic function when LIHECI(离合词) are separated and used together. We regard LIHECI(离合词) as the mid-state on the continuum of words and phrases on academic aspect; while we regard them as words on teaching aspect.Conclusion. After concluding the viewpoints of the whole article, we propose other problems for further study.
