This thesis aims to solve two issues regarding the Yatti shahr regime of Ya'qub Beg:its territory and administrative division as well as the evolution of collective identities of native oasis dwellers in the Tarim Basin in this period.By comparing and checking various historical sources, chapter 1 re-presents the stable territory of this regime in 1867-1870 and 1872-1876, re-produces its administrative division in two temporal sections of 1873-1874 and 1876-77,and summarizes the characteristics in these two respects of this islamic administration.Firstly, through the perspective of excluding "the Others",the second chapter demonstrates how oasis Uighurs prior to Ya'qub Beg regime defined their own boundary of identity by applying the criteria of religious belief, lifestyle, language, and geography.Secondly, the author describes the perceptions of outsiders like Qing authority,Andjianis, and Europeans on native oasis dwellers as a whole. Finally,by analysing the further alienation of Andjianis as "the Other",the strengthening of regional identity of Alti shahr/Y(a|¨)tti shahr, and the enquiry on their own historical origin made by Uighur elites, the last part shows that the collective identity of the Uighurs were greatly enhanced in this era.
