Hou Dengke is a benchmark-setting photographer in Chinese contemporary documentary photography, and as well as one of the leaders for "Shaanxi Group", a great driving force group in photography in the new era in China. His photography and photographic concept have made a shock and far-reaching effect on the Chinese concept of photography in the 1990s of the last century. His name is honored as the one which cannot be bypassed in the history of Chinese contemporary photography.This article is divided into three parts:The first part is the photographic experience of Hou Dengke and the formation of his documentary photography concept. Taking 1989 as the boundary, dividing his experience into two phases and combining the main trends of contemporary photography, Hou Dengke's important photography experience, photography and style are analyzed and studied.In second part, the unique style documentary photography concept of Hou Dengke is discussed separately. Hou Dengke's documentary photography of rural subjects and the important factors for forming the style are sorted out in the second part. The macro-social factors, and middle-level elements of the influence by friends in photography circle as well as the micro-level elements such as his personal growth experience and professional identity are also analyzed in the second part,In the third part, under the current situation, Hou Dengke's documentary photography is re-analyzed, which has been divided into two sides, the positive and negative aspects. On the one hand, the significance of documentary photography is affirmed positively as "building the history by photography", including the active promoting role to make up the historical deficiency and importance of recording history of the western region for human being, which would disappear soon. On the other hand, his inadequacies are pointed out, such as the limitation in photographic language and subject.
