The adjective is one of the three main categories of notional words in Chinese,the grammatical functions of which has been being increasingly complicated and diversified since the early period of ancient Chinese. The adjective plays the same crucial part in Chinese sentence patterns as the verb does,the research of which can make contribution to the various studies of Ancient Chinese semantic and grammar, such as glozing words,structures of phrases, patterns of sentences.This article is on the adjectives in Han Feizi. An exhaustive investigation has been made on the characteristics of the adjective functioning as predicates. There are 640 adjectives in Han Feizi, which can be divided into two types: the adjective of quality and the adjective of state, according to the meanings and grammar. The adjectives in Han Feizi mainly function as attributes and predicates. Functioning as predicates, the adjectives can form simple predicative sentences and complex predicative sentences. There are 8 types of basic sentences patterns of the simple predicative sentences of the adjectives.and 4 stypes of basic sentences patterns of the complex ones. There are 76 types of predicate sentence patterns of the adjectives,including 1002 sentences,derivated from the basic sentence patterns, and they have their own structures respectively.The adjectives in Han Feizi also can function as non-predicate components. Generally speaking,there are no markers when the adjective of quality functions as attributes and the adjectives of state as adverbials,while there are markers when the adjectives as non-predicates.The adjectives are very rich in Han Feizi. There are a variety of multi-syllable word formations,such as the derivation by phonetic change of word-construction,the combination of word-construction and the suffix of word-construction,ect.The adjectives can act as all kinds of sentence components and form various types of sentence. These manifest the characteristics of Chinese during the Warring States Period.Having studied all examples of the adjectives acting as predicates in Han Feizi, a detailed description of the characteristics of the sentence patterns is given in this article, comprehensively revealing the features of the adjectives in Han Feizi: the various sentence patterns and the prevalent syncretic phenomena of sentence patteras,which illustrate that the adjective-predicated sentences had developed maturely and also show that as a great ideologist,Han FeiZi was perfectly skilled in Chinese and his language was quitely with logic.
