The Tu-an teaching started in the period of the Republic of China. Since then, a large number of books were edited and released by the scholars taking on the Tu-an teaching, which assisted the Tu-an teaching to establish a relatively complete teaching material framework. However, it is hard to have the genuine academic communication and exploration on the Tu-an teaching since it was more or less restricted by the secondary vocational education at that time, and by the influence of the spontaneous behavior of the compilation and publication of various kinds of teaching materials as well. Therefore, there was difficulty in having the academic communication and exploration in the compilation of the textbooks. What's more, the Tu-an teaching was still classified into the list of branches, and couldn't be regarded as textbooks of higher education, which made few contemporary scholars who were engaging in higher education researches, know Tu-an teaching materials in the Republic of China. Meanwhile, those scholars had no idea of the Tu-an teaching as well as Theory of Tu-an named in the Republic of China. As a result, their understanding had deviated from the original materials, and many statements did not conform to the actual content. For instance, misunderstandings, like the concept of"design is equivalent to change", occurred. In view of this, the thesis, by the adoption of the idea of Textology, the collection and analysis of different versions of the Tu-an textbooks, and the decoding of the Tu-an textbooks at that time, aims at revealing the true meaning of the Tu-an teaching in the period of the Republic of China, defines the meaning of"Theory of Tu-an", and corrects the contemporary scholars'misunderstanding of it, which would provide the historical citation for the reinstatement and establishment of the research on"Theory of Tu-an"and is quite meaningful to the Tu-an teaching of contemporary art and design teaching methodology.
