More than 1/3 of films ever produced all over the world were adapted from famous literary works, with influences to audience much greater than to readers. It is still a tendency nowadays. I would try to explore the interactive development of movies and literary works through the comparison between them with references from relevant existed theories. The aim is to provide adaptation necessary experience conclusion and theory support.Novel is one of the important sources of adaptation. Lots of famous movies were adapted from novels. The developing movie and TV culture makes novel meets with new challenges. The types of novels as well as adapting methods are more and more changeable. Many new and controversial questions will be discussed here. The dissertation would research on the categories and process of adaptations. Referring lots of theory materials and film reviews, I have analyzed the texts and phenomena. I also have kept active communication with my tutor and some screenwriters on that topic. I discussed the differences between novels and scripts and how a novel being adapted into a film from the angle of a screenwriter. This dissertation consists of six chapters including the introduction and conclusion. Chapter Two analyzes that adapted work is an important source of films and concluded the history of adaptation of one century. Chapter Three analyzes the similarity and difference of movie and novel as well as the definition of adaptation. Chapter Four illustrates the several methods of adapting and concludes some common ways. Chapter Five is the comparison between novels and movies, which has already been mentioned a bit in the above chapters. So in Chapter Five I mainly study on the different views of writers and directors. There are two innovated points in the paper. One is that I described the process of adaptation as a novel writer as well as film director. I also compared the differences between the two by introducing lots of novels and films. The other one is that I proved that the description of mind inside can also been expressed by films. Therefore I got the conclusion: adapted film is the sublimation of novels, which is another form of beauty.
