Wei Yuan Tourism Dynasty

Wei Yuan was in a special historical background and personal background, this paper analyzes the real reasons for his travel, and the details of his traveling life. Wei Yuan was born in a host family which had the traditions of learning about the Confucian doctrine, he learned a lot of Confucian classics. Then Huxiang's environment and Jiangzhe's culture influenced Wei Yuan's thoughts, laid the ideological foundations for conducting practical life, and devoted the whole life to the people. Meanwhile, travel was very popular in Late Qing Dynasty, there were a large number of tourist investigating into the community to find the ways of making the country stronger. Wei Yuan was one typical representative. He chose to travel, from the early days study-tours in Beijing to the medium-term assistant-work in Jiangnan, then to the late-period be an official in Yangzhou, Wei Yuan concerned the reality in his tourism, writing endlessly, carrying out his purpose of"do"in a troublesome era, he was regarded as"a pioneer of practical tourism style". Excursion was not just one step, Wei Yuan's each excursion had its own reasons promoting behind. Firstly he liked climbing; then needed to visit many friends to make a trip; later staying in Jiangnan, tried to put the practical ideas into performance; lastly writing books made him run everywhere, unable to settle in one place. To inspect his traveling life, mainly divided into five phases, earlier reading books and living leisurely; studying in Beijing, he made friends and took trips; after failing in the exam, he moved to Nanjing to display his ideas; then staying in Yangzhou; in his later years living in Hangzhou. Each stage has its own unique background and characteristics. Analyzing Wei Yuan's tourism behavior, the answer of his pursuing comprehensive tourism is combining Confucius'idea and Zhuangzi's concept. On the one hand, on the special conditions he performed his practical thoughts to make social norms; on the other hand, he got close to nature forgetting sadness and troubles. Finally, Analyzing the impact of tourism on himself and later generations, concluded that traveling life's significance to Wei Yuan. As the records of his traveling life, his landscape poetry's wide coverage, realistic description and profound implication were that previous poets can't compare with. Besides,the way he study has a further impact on later generations.
