Yugan(语感)is a concept put forward in teaching and learning Chinese. Generally speaking, it refers to a person's subconscious sense and feeling towards language. It doesn't have an exact English counterpart, so it could be translated as"the sense of language". As it is can be known literally, Yugan is definitely both related to"sense"and to"language", so it should be a topic which interests both psychologists and linguists. However, theses on Yugan from linguistic point of view are small in number and discussed in a narrow way, not to say a conclusion on its definition and its psychological mechanism. However, Yugan is a hot topic in the academic circle of language teaching (Chinese teaching, Chinese teaching as a second language and foreign language teaching). The study traditions of language teaching and linguistics are greatly different, even contradictious in some aspects. As a result, the linguistic definition of Yugan becomes a target attacked by scholars from other researching fields. Besides, even its definition made by the language-teaching field needs discussion and improvement. This thesis believes that though the study traditions of language teaching and linguistics are greatly different, the essence is the same. This thesis redefined Yugan and researched its forming and working mechanism with the help of linguistic theories, together with psychological studies.
