The Study Of Early Chinese Buddhist Doctrine Modal Particle

The important value in corpus of the Chinese translation of Buddhist scriptures has won the recognition of the academics. The dissertation selects early Middle-Ages 69 volume Chinese translation of Buddhist scriptures, and then mainly focuses on the research on the usage of the tone auxiliaries in early Buddhist scriptures of Chinese translation. It describes tone auxiliaries at the period in summary and gives a detailed static description and explanation based on the exhaustive research, and then makes a comparison with the materials like San Guo Zhi (三国志) , Shi Shuo Xin Yu (世说新语) to explore synchronic differences and diachronic changes among them to point out the characteristics and cause of the system, which help people understand the real outlook of the system of the tone auxiliaries at the period and their trace of historical development in order to make some useful and necessary complement to the research of Chinese history.Through research, we have discovered the followings:Firstly, overall the frequency of the use of the tone auxiliaries in the early Chinese translation of Buddhist scriptures is low. However, at this period the frequency of use also appears to be the characteristics of low early and high after. Their usage also much relies on transmission primarily. The newly emerging usage is rare and relatively dull overall.Secondly, the tone auxiliaries of Ancient Buddhist Scripture which succeeds from ancient Chinese and used widely is Ye (也) and Yi (矣) .They are different in the pre-Qin period. However, there are many examples in the Buddhist Scripture such as Ye (也) uses as Yi (矣) . There was also a large number of Ye (也) and Yi (矣) mixed examples, which is one kind of grammar phenomenon that is noteworthy.Thirdly, the tone auxiliaries of Ancient Buddhist Scripture which has strong vitality is Hu (乎) ,Ye (耶) and Er (耳) .However, the use of the tone auxiliaries such as Yan (焉),Fu (夫),Er' Yi (而已), Zai(哉) is dull,which is in state of decline.Fourthly, through the investigation on tone auxiliaries Er (尔) in the early Chinese version of Buddha's allusion quotations, it is found that Er (尔) , as a tone auxiliaries word, does not have interrogative mood, but has a hint mood. This misunderstanding results from its appearance in interrogative sentences for a long time and it seems to have interrogative mood.Fifthly, the use of tone auxiliaries in the Ancient Buddhist Scripture "Liu Du ji Jing" (六度集经) has its prominent feature: there are a large number of common tone auxiliaries, and the frequency of use is also high. The reason isn't only related with the content of Buddhist scriptures, but also the result of personal style.
