Based on the divergent judgments on Manet's paintings since 1960s, the paper introduces Manet's painting career and analyzes in details his masterpieces "Luncheon on the Grass" and "Olympia" , trying to form a more thorough and accurate judgment on his art. The paper also puts forward such characteristics as the discrepancies between his art thought and attitudes as well as ambiguous expression techniques, which lead to such flaws as unclear theme in his works. All of these affected his artistic achievements to some extent. Such a judgment corresponds to the fact that there exist a certain divergent comments among artists and art critics regarding Manet's paintings. The paper further points out that these flaws in Manet's painting mainly stem from the two aspects of subjectivity and objectivity. The objective reason is related with the nature of the class in which art was placed during the transitional period in the 19th century. The subjective reason is his dual realistic personality of being to faithful to himself and being ready to compromise.
