College students are in the legal delay period, and they use this time to learn and test various roles, to learn various skills and contact all kinds of ideas, values and outlook on life, to try to make a choice, to make decision on his own outlook on life, values and future career in repeated attempts, then ultimately form their own self-identity.Role-playing online games become a role-testing platform for college students, they test various ideal roles through playing games to meet their psychological needs.What's college students'motivation to play online games? They will play what role in online games? How their motivation and role types are related to their self-identity? All these issues are discussed in this study.This study uses a questionnaire survey, which revises the role-playing online games motivation questionnaire and the role of type questionnaire, the questionnaire reflect players'motivation and choice of role types to participate in online games.The revised questionnaire achieves a certain degree of reliability and validity standards, and become more suitable for related research in localization. This study selectes 700 1-3 grade college students from Sichuan University, Southwest University of Science and Technology, Leshan Normal College, Neijiang Normal Collegeto survery, who respectively majors in arts and science respectively, and 461 valid questionnaires are recovered.This study finds: (1) College students'motivation of participating in role-playing online games includes entertainment and sociality, self-affirmation, avoiding obligation and social norms. The role types choosen by college students includes sociality, explorers, killer, achiever and upgrader;(2) Thers is no significant difference in the dimensions of gender and major for motivation of playing role-playing online games in the gender dimension of the motivation, but there was significant difference in game experience for self-affirmation motivation. Thers was significant difference in the dimensions of role types for different grades. There was significant difference in the role of explorer for play time each week.(3)The motivation of playing role-playing online games intermediary has positive prediction influence on college students'self-identity throgh their choice of role types.
