After the New Culture Movement, the relation between literature and city got closely moreand more. Qingdao city sprung in the early years of the 20th Century and grew up to aninternational metropolis famous for its industry, business, foreign trade, sightseeing and vacation.It formed unique character and position in cities of China which supplied essential cultural soil forthe prospering of Qingdao's contemporary literature. The publication of Qing Chao marked thesprout of Qingdao's local literature and was the first literature garden created by Qingdao'sauthors. It made profound and lasting influence on Qingdao's contemporary literature steppinginto consciousness era. Many liberalism scholars and authors such as Yang zhensheng, Wenyiduo, Liang shiqiu, Shen congwen got together in Qingdao because of the founding of State-runQingdao University and the mainstream of Xinyue authors came into being. The novels, essaysand poems created by them were representative works during the period. After the establishing ofState-run Shandong University, two main bodies of literature came forth which one wasacademism professors and the other was young authors in society with the same ideology of leftwing. The representative works were Luotuo xiangzi by Laoshe, Bayue de xiangcun by Xiaojun,Shengsichang by Xiaohong, Yushu by Wu boxiao etc. The periodical Bishu luhua was a summitfor authors in Qingdao as well as witnessed the shining of starry sky in the 1930's literature ofQingdao.Generally Qingdao's contemporary literature experienced three periods of beginning,springing and flourishing in the broad background of the second ten-years (1928~1937) ofChinese contemporary literature. The authors with various styles and different schools createdabundant works in Qingdao directly resulted in the peak of literature and unique literaturephenomena during the 1930's. This thesis divides the second ten years of Qingdao's contemporaryliterature into three periods marked respectively by the publication of Qing Chao, the foundationof State-run Qingdao University and the establishment of State-run Shandong University. Theywill be expounded from such two angles as literature history and the relation between literatureand city, as well as hold a background of the thoughts trend of contemporary literature andQingdao's local culture.
