In 1,979, Li Ch'ing-chao: Complete Poems was translated by Kenneth Rexroth and Ling Chung and first published by New Directions in the United States simultaneously in Canada by George J.Meleod Ltd.Toronto. It has gained wide praises from both the American readers and Chinese academia ever since. The author of this thesis believes that such success was resulted from the excellent harmony between faithfulness and readability of the translated book. This thesis aims at looking into the translating strategy adopted by the translators which constitutes a major reason for this harmony. The thesis consists of three chapters. In Chapter One, the author analyzes the intention of the target book through summarizing the characteristics of its content; Then comparing the target texts with the source texts by means of close reading andclassifying the sixty-six translated poems into two major groups--"translatedpoems with minor amendments" and "translated poems with overall changes" according to the loyalty of them, the author demonstrates the two groups of target poems in Chapter Two and Three respectively; Meanwhile, the thesis borrows the established "Xin, Da, Ya" theory from Chinese translating academia as a parameter to highlight the features of their translating strategy. The Conclusion achieves an answer that the harmony between faithfulness and readability gained by Rexroth and Ling Chung was created mainly through accurate translating of the poetic thoughts of the source text, proper interpretation and adaptation of the poetic structure, image etc.of the source text and overall changes of the source text which actually turns out to be a fascination to their readers.
