On the basis of previous studies, this thesis presents an overall synthesis of the definition, origin, development and decline of folk songs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, among which "Moli Hua (Jasmine)" is a typical example. Adopting an interdisciplinary synthetic approach, it makes a comprehensive case study of its musical and literary values both in history and at present time.As one of the most influential and typical tune names of folk songs, "Moli Hua (Jasmine)" had became well-known as early as the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. Not only is it deeply loved by Chinese people, but it has also been spread to other countries and become representative of Chinese folk songs.Through detailed analyses of "Moli Hua (Jasmine)", the present thesis is intended to search for the developmental laws of traditional Chinese music, which, despite its internal steadiness in some periods, is on the whole constantly changing. Influenced by different regions, dialects, traditions and customs, its content and plot seek constant changes while retaining its essentials and basic characteristics.The whole thesis falls into six chapters. The outlines the definitions of folk songs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties and their academic values are presented in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 is given a review of their origin, development and decline of the Folk Qu of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Chapter 3 is given a summary of their themes and aesthetic features of the Folk Qu of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In Chapter 4, attempts are made to introduce the "Moli Hua (Jasmine)" and its origin is traced. Chapter 5 is devoted to an exploration of its developments. The "Moli Hua (Jasmine)" spreading abroad is related and in Chapter 6. Finally, a summary is given.
