In May 1937, ShiTuo who was wet behind the ears won the literature prize of DaGong Newspaper for his first short story collection named Gu, which made him become famous overnight. But the lucky beginning didn't mean the smooth road, although his later works became better and better, in a long time, he slid away from the line of people's sight, and wasn't on the surface of critics and literature history until the end of 1970s. By analyzing ShiTuo's mental flux, this dissertation plans to touch a common writer's real feelings under the intricate background, and try to be close enough to understand his work's complicated connotation. The foreword reviewed and summarized several points of view about ShiTuo research: society-history, culture character, narrative pattern etc. in order to point that it is devoid of painstaking and systemic pectination of ShiTuo's mental flux, which established the radical direction for spreading the dissertation's central content. The first chapter told of ShiTuo's anxiety of surviving and influence outside that he encountered when straying. It was the absence of warmth in his childhood and the constant effect of folklore that urged him to choose the lifestyle On the Road, formed his quiet and earnest attitude when dealing with the world. So, when the literal world became polarized and ideological bit by bit, he placed himself away from Jing and Zuo, keeping autocephaly. However, it led to the mottled and rough text, which gave readers an unharmonious sense. The second chapter analyzed the hard frustration ShiTuo had to faced in 1940s when he was buried alive, which involved durance of thought, suppression of surviving and individual's inability. It was the time of dying that ShiTuo had been purified and sublimed to some degree, and by the expatiation of eternal theme such as time and life he reached his zenith of works, and achieved his suffering journey in autumn not only on content but also on narrative pattern. In the third chapter, ShiTuo stopped earning his living by writing, he wasn't a free stranger any more, but turned to be a public mouthpiece who had to act in order, as a result, his works' theme and type changed stealthily. Contrasting LiShiWuQing and SanGeXiaoRenWu, it is clear to see the way reason conquered sensibility for submitting to the authority. ShiTuo accepted the times' nationalization by twisting and in use of many articles written to occation, eisegesis, and drastic bowdlerization. At the same time, in his on-the-spot-records as diaries and letters we could still discover his animadvert on the real problems, which disclosed the pain, conflict, tension in his deep heart. The epilogue represented ShiTuo's mentality journey sketchily, and probed into the embarrassed place of intellectual who was over the edge, in order to show that: although ShiTuo as a writer could not depend on his imaginativeness, his piety towards life and his respect to writing still brought us to move.ShiTuo stood between the elite and the earthling, as if his ideal to be a tale-teller, his orientation of a barnstormer.
