As the founder of the Baiyangding genre in the Chinese modern and contemporary literature history, Sun Li appears in all the textbooks on mainstream literature with his unique writing style. Undoubtedly, Sun Li's works in all his periods are in accordance with the mainstream literature, and he spares no effort in writing for the age and society. But one can always feel a kind of uniqueness in his works which are regarded as the template of the mainstream. There are many researches on Sun Li, and it is pointed out that, by some scholars, "There always is a "marginal" feature in his position of the mainstream literature."Yet there is no systematic research on the topic of Sun Li's marginality in his literary creation. So, this thesis will give a comparatively systematic study and summary on his marginality from both the internal reason and external presentation, besides that, this thesis will research into his cultural personality, literary subject and art of storytelling so as to present a comprehensive summarization of the reason and presentation of this marginalization.This thesis can be divided into three parts: Chapter One "Marginalization of the cultural personality" mainly discusses the innate cause of Sun Li's marginalization. Writer's choice of literary subject, aesthetical appreciation and technique of writing is bound to have a psychological reason, so the study of Sun Li's marginalized choice of literary creation should begin with the study of his cultural personality. In the analyses of Sun Li's cultural personality, this thesis focuses on these three aspects: the cultural personality of an intellectual, the persistent complex of local favor and the natural mild Taoist aesthetics. In Sun Li's opinion, literature should have an aesthetical appreciation form which is not free to be vulgarized. He regards the cultural participation, cultural services, as the way for the liberation of the nation and the peasant rather than a way for getting an official post. He has spent all his life with a style of "unification of cultivation of morality and mentality, self-perfection and literary creation". Therefore, while a majority of writers lost their viewpoints as intellectuals and are assimilated by the politics after they joined the revolution, Sun Li still held his principle as a intellectual and pursuit his literary career, consciously or unconsciously drifting around the fringe of the mainstream. The adequate living condition and warm family life have given Sun Li a warm view towards the countryside, in his eyes, the countryside is nice and the peasants are lovely, so he can continuously see the summit of the beauty from countryside and peasants. His kind of country complex is different from those prevailing subject at that time. Another main line throughout his literary activity is the Taoist aesthetic spirit. It is the Taoist aesthetic spirit that makes Sun Li inherit Zhuangzi's vein of emphasis on spiritual freedom and drift away around the mainstream of ideology, roam in his "pure beautiful" country life.
