Chinese Dialects To Indicate The Type Of Pronoun System

This paper mainly deals with the demonstrative pronoun of Chinese dialects.Although the demonstrative pronouns are small and isolate, their differences and characteristics in Chinese dialects are worthy of research. It is of much value todiscuss such a problem so as to deepen our understanding of modern Chinese-including Chinese dialects and even ancient Chinese.Previous studies on the demonstrative pronoun system of Chinese dialects were briefly reviewed. Based on the method of descriptive linguistics and linguistic geography, a number of historical documents, studies related to dialectology, and materials collected from 741 different areas, synchronic features of the demonstrative pronoun in Chinese dialects was systematically described and analyzed. According to the geographical distribution of the demonstrative pronoun system, we distinguish two different types of the demonstrative pronoun systems: dichotomy and trichotomy.A diachronic survey was also conducted to interpret the historical progress of the demonstrative pronoun and its relationship with ancient Chinese in different periods. The spreading trend of the demonstrative pronoun was predicted at the end of this paper.
