| YAO Wen-tian(1756-1827), who once styled himself Qiu-nong, was born in Gui'an,Zhejiang. YAO was a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations during Jiaqing period of Qing dynasty and later became the Minister of Ministry of Rites infeudal China and finished lots of works. This thesis, a study of Shuo Wen Sheng Xi, aims to contribute to research into classical phonology of Qingdynasty.Yao was good at studing Shuo Wen and held scientific theory about harmonious Character components.The thesis consists of five chapters: Chapter One serves as an introduction. This part tells about the purpose of the work, the recent research in this field and the methods as well as the procedure of the composition. Chapter Two makes an introduction of YAO Wen-tian and Shuo Wen Sheng Xi . Chapter Three makes a comparison between harmonious Characters in Shuo Wen Sheng Xi and the extant Da Xu Version of Shuo Wen and analyses the reasons of their differences. Chapter Four makes a comparison between harmonious Characters components in Shuo Wen Sheng Xi, specializes YAO's rectification on the phonetic part which is not found in the Da Xu Version of Shuo Wen. and discusses the influence of Shuo Wen Sheng Xi to the classical phonology of YAO. Chapte Five makes a study on the Initials which in the rhyme parts.Chapter Six comments on YAO's Shuo Wen Sheng Xi in terms of contributions and errors. |
