Line words in modern Chinese refer to the syntactic units whose structure is so loose that some other components can be inserted between its original elements while the original meaning of the syntactic units mainly remain the same. Line words, as a distinctive linguistic phenomenon in modern Chinese, have been much discussed from various ways . The past researches on line words are either theoretical descriptions or example-oriented ones. Based on the previous research findings, I hereby put forward my own views on the classification and types of line words. Proper entries are selected from the dictionary and then a detailed account of line words' classifications is made.The dissertation consists of five parts:The Introduction.Part is mainly a literature review. After a discussion of the review, I analyze my research direction and the potential problems , then come up with my own classification and narrow down my research field. Chapter 1 is a detailed classification description of the concrete types and isolation cases of line words. A typical structure of line words has the impressive power of assimilation which enables other structures to be isolated in the same way. Meanwhile, an explanation is given. Chapter 2 concentrates on the new usage of line words: certain line words can be followed by objects on the condition of combination. A semantic classification of the objects in this case is made and the formation of this structure is explored semantically, syntactically and pragmatically. Chapter 3 mainly deals with isolation terms and causes. Previous study on this part is always fixed on one single aspect. However, in my opinion, various factors attribute to the formation of isolation rather than a single one. Grammaticalizatiom and Disyllabification in the Chinese language, cognitive psychology and the features of V-0 structure all cause the "temporary isolation" . After the exhaustive discussion of the line words in the first three chapters, we can clearly see the transitional feature of line words from "phrases to words" and are also aware that the use and isolation of line words are inevasible and derivable.The conclusion part is a summary of line words and a prediction of their future development.
