Northern Song Northwest Walled City System

It is a more unique historical phenomenon in Chinese ancient history that the activity of building stronghold village in Northwest area in Northern Song Dynasty. The stronghold villages not only played a very important role between the battle of Song and Xixia dynasty, but also exerted great influence in developing the Northwest area.This thesis will divide into four parts and describe this question in view of above-mentioned standpoint. Chapter one, on the basis of quantity statistics of stronghold villages in Northwest area, makes the further quantitative analysis. Chapter two, with the foundation of chapter one, according to function, the stronghold villages can be divided five types. And point out that the change of the stronghold village position caused by the change of their function. Chapter three, analyzed the site selection, scale and structure of stronghold villages, further expound that physical geography and the purpose of building differently caused the diversification of stronghold villages. Chapter four described the forming and perfection of management system of stronghold villages. Especially explained from two respects of officers' management system and duty.It is quite remarkable achievement that the measure of building stronghold villages along the Northwest border of Northern Song Dynasty. The stronghold villages not only resisted the invasion of Xixia dynasty successfully, but also became an effective means of seize a large number land from Xixia dynasty. Meanwhile propagated the advanced civilization of Central Plains, and influenced greatly the forming of city, town, township, settlement and the afterward local organizational system.
