On The Status Of Women In The Song Dynasty And Its Role In Society

In Chinese ancient history, women' position was gradually descending. Song Dynasty is regarded as the turning-point of descending by many people. In the thesis, the author inspect women' position based on domestic discipline,wedding and law. Then the author tells about their contribution to the society in order to give them a clear description.From domestic discipline, we know that they have some rights in their families. In some condition, they can manage their families. Unmarried women have the right to inherit the property. We know that they have a loose social atmosphere by comparing women in Song Dynasty with women in Tang Dynasty. The henpecked phenomenon also tells us that women have some social position. In the law, women was no longer thought of as men's dependency and given some freedom.In addition to playing traditional roles, women also attend handicraft industry and commerce. Some women act actively in social political activities, who are mainly emperor' mothers and official' wives. Women also make some contribution to social culture. Some women were good at poet creating, painting and etc.And some women make contribution to public utilities .In conclusion, women still play big roles in many fields and they still have some position in family and society. Song Dynasty isn't the turning-point of women position descending. They have some position in family and society, which make it possible that they play roles in family and society. Their contribution to family and society would make their position ascending.
