The three Chinese adverbs, "hai","you",and"zai",are used quite differently but are easily confused by non-native speakers. This article therefore aims to summarize and analyze former research on this topic and also provide some suggestions on teaching the differences to students of Chinese as a foreign language, by investigating the instances in which Chinese and Japanese students use the three adverbs, focusing especially on how Japanese students usually confuse them. The aims and methodology of this article are as follows : First, searching the meaning and usage of the three adverbs, "hai","you",and"zai",using dictionaries and various documents, reducing the results into a chart. Second, following the theory of Matsumoto, by separating the adverbs into two categories, "basic meaning"and "derivative meaning". Third, investigating the usage of the adverbs by Chinese and Japanese students classifying them as "basic"or"derivative". Fourth, finding the common meaning within the adverbs, "hai","you",and"zai",and what percentage of Japanese students confused the meaning. Fifth, analyzing whether errors in sentences which have the most mistakes are related to Japanese syntax. Sixth, analyzing the reasons for mistakes . Seventh, showing the similarities and differences of each adverb with regard to the common meaning of "repetition". Finally, providing suggestions for teaching this problem to students of Chinese as a foreign language.
