A survey of the literary arena as of 1990s indicates that, Whether in terms of pioneering writing techniques typical of the intellect of in terms of feminine narration, Xu Kun,in a sense ,is really representative in these aspects. Integrating wits of the intelligentsia, comedy and irony characteristic of the 1990s and deep reflections of feminism, Xu Kun paints a series of wonderful portraits in which joy mingles with sorrow. On reflection, the trend of thought formed in late 1980s in vanguard literature underwent stagnation, disintegration and adjustment after 1993 .The newly-emerged "New Generation" writers, with more radical writing techniques of deconstructing, shakes and demolishes the grand theme narration in depth in fables. They attempt to reveal and record the process of integration of the cultural climate of the enlightenment and of the spirit of vanguard literature during 1980s and beyond. As a result, Xu Kun's works are closely interrelated with such background. To be exact, Xu's equivocal writing style, intense tragic coloring under the mask of comedy are the unique products of the times. In the thesis, I shall explore her utilization of the two perspectives-style of narration typical of the intellect and feminine narration and, furthermore, find out similarities, differences and intersections of the both perspectives for the purpose of providing a general picture of her writing style.Xu Kun,as a female and scholar, does her writing with some aesthetic feature. For example, with the metaphor of "In Winter", a typically culture-loaded context, Xu tries to embody the spiritual representations of intellect in 1990s,i.e.merry-making and weeping. Moreover, she intends to change the male-dominated society from a feminine angle and with afemale consciousness in order to try constructing framework consisting of women's language and spiritual outlook. On one hand, she deconstructs, in a post-modernism of merry-making manner, the so-called "elite culture" of the intelligentsia with an ironical tone to reveal their spiritual and cultural crises. On the other hand, she also objectively delineates the females' daily life, which, with the transition from male characters to female ones and interweaving of their feelings, embodies a scholar's stand and outlook. I hope, with a careful review and discussion of Xu's themes, cultural connotation and narration styles, I shall be able to provide a comprehensive summary of her writing device and significance.
