This thesis, focusing on the values of the poems on calligraphy of the Tang Dynasty.This thesis is divided into the following chapters:The introduction chapter includes the reasons for selecting the topic to be studied, describes the current situation of calligraphy poems of the Tang Dynasty, elaborates on the theoretical and academic significances as well as the researching methods of the study, and defines the calligraphy poemsn of the Tang Dynasty.Chapter 1 mainly disc usses the reasons for formation of the poems on calligraphy of Tang and the features of them as historical calligraphic materials. This chapter has two sections.The first section discusses the reasons for formation of the poems. First, the formation is due to the prosperity of the poems and calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty.Second,the creation motives of calligraphy poems of the Tang Dynasty include two types: one is to meet the needs of communication, and the other is to express the poets' own feelings.The second section mainly discusses the features of the poems used as historical calligraphic materials. Based upon the above reasons of formation, the poems on calligraphy of Tang have four major features. First, the poems have the property of directness and historicity in the reflection of historical realities. This is the fundamental reason to prove their value.Second, these calligraphy poems have strong subjectivity and thrivial property, in terms of their content.Third,these calligraphy poems are vivid in reflecting historical realities.Finally,they bears problems of illegibility and exaggeration of information.Chapter 2 mainly introduces the overall situation of the calligraphy poems of different stages in the Tang Dynasty. It consists of four sections, dealing with their four stages respectively: the initial stage of the Tang Dynasty, the prosperous stage of the Tang Dynasty, the middle stage of the Tang Dynasty, and the terminal stage of the Tang Dynasty. In the initial stage of the Tang Dynasty, there were very limited numbers of the poems on calligraphy. Following the prosperous stage of Tang, theformation of calligraphy poems reached their summit in the middle stage of Tang with the largest number of poems proficiently created. In the terminal stage of the Tang Dynasty, the number of calligraphy poems is only second to that of the middle stage. In the late period of Tang, the creation of the poems on calligraphy was still a common practice, but their development moved on to another stage as the Tang Dynasty collapsed.Chapter 3 studies the style of the crazy cursive script in the Tang Dynasty by examining the poems on calligraphy of Tang. The poems on crazy cursive script account for half of the poems on calligraphy of Tang. Attempting to study the history of crazy cursive script from these poems, this chapter includes two sections, i.e. Zhang Xu and He Zhizhang in the Poems on Calligraphy of the Tang Dynasty and The Buddhist Monks Who Is Skilled in Crazy Cursive Script. This chapter also provides an important illustration of the value of the poems as historical calligraphic materials.Chapter 4 mainly studies the different cultural functions of the different styles of characters by researching on calligraphy poems of Tang. There are big gaps among calligraphy poems of various writing styles. Poems on crazy cursive script, which top others, account for half of the total. Poems on seal script and official script come next in terms of their numbers. There is only one poem on formal script which was the script in common use. The poems on half-cursive script are not found. These differences reflect the different cultural functions of the different styles of characters. As stated in this thesis, the main function of cursive script is for aesthetic judgment, the main cultural function of formal script lies in practical use, and the main function of seal script and official script is for communication and token of the ancient classic culture.
