As an essential part of Chinese piano art, the piano music which is arranged from instrumental is drawing more and more attention from both domestic and international music circles. There's no doubt that this kind of arrangement is the best in the same field of China as well as imposes great influence on international music circles because of its strong national charm, distinctive characteristics of the age and profound aesthetic connotation.Taking Chinese piano arrangement as the object, this thesis is divided into four parts:Part I introduces the 90 years' history of Chinese piano music, which consists of 4 stages: from the beginning of the 20th century to 1920s, the budding period; from 1930s to 1940s, the period of development; from 1950s to 1970s, the flourishing period; from 1980s until now, the mature period. This thesis gives a concise introduction of the typical works of each period as well as an inducive classification.Part II gives an outline introduction to Chinese piano arrangement from two aspects. Firstly, an analysis of the historical background and reasons for its emergence is shown. Secondly, such arrangement can be subdivided into two types according to the forms of playing. One type includes those which adopt the original structure. The other refers to those which further develop the musical figures by changing the original structures. Both types have two subdivisions, i.e. the Chinese piano music arranged from national instrumental solo and ensemble. The relations and differences between the national instrumental and piano arrangement are indicated by the analysis of the mode and tonality, structure of musical forms, composition features and content.Part III states the musicianship of Chinese piano arrangement, and that of playing piano to imitate the national instrumental is further explained from six respects: the performance of gracenotes, such as appoggiatura, trill and mordent ;the performance of arpeggio; the performance of passages; the performance of linear melody; the performance in order to imitate the traditional instrument; the application of pedals. The last part refers to the significance of Chinese piano arrangement from five aspects: the significant change of public view on it; the value of its existence; its social functions; the international approval and its prospect.
