Mao Dun wrote Eclipse and rainbow at the beginning of his writing career, vividly showing after the failure of the great revolution the dashing, wavering and pursuit of the young intellectuals, especially the modern females. Rereading his works of his time, we can see from his steps of pursuing changes his orbit of writing evolution. This essay mainly inquires into Mao Dun's writing thought and motivation image of the characters and image modeling in his early novel writing career.This essay made a calm analysis of social problems. Through the calm analysis into the social function of the New literature, he found there existed problems which tend to formularize and generalize in the realistic literature developing in the China's New literature development. This essay included Mao Dun's new cognition about New literature serving target. He chose the writing road directed against petty bourgeoisie. In the target of description, he first placed modern female on the leading position. Compare with writers of his time, this kind of thought was more sensitive.Talking of image of the characters, his modern female had vivid personalities. This essay mainly analyze 4 kinds of personalities: Firstly, the environment in which the characters live were different. Secondly, the characters were struggling in the contradiction conflict. The young females looked for independenceand jobs, but their dream didn't come true. They wandered about and then insisted on going forward.Thirdly, the young females didn't want to depend on others ,they want to get rid of man-centered and they declared in public the enjoyment of sex was the right of the female.Lastly, the young females were attracted by the new idea, new concept and new things. They absorbed learned throughand put it into then: own practice. They discovered sensitively the imperfection of new things, which made them suspicious of the new things.Mao Dun was a famous writer, he learned through literature experience but not mechanically. He always learned through creation. He had high psychological description, such as still psychological analysis and dynamic process. He drew lessons from hallucination, dreamland and innermost monologue, he adopted clever imagination, he was good at minute description. He could also write small figures in the magnificent environment.
