India's urban development was stimulated during the colonial period, but the distortions in the settlement system are notably marked. The hypertrophy of metropolitan centers is all in the new port towns and in areas suitable for plantation, agriculture or canal irrigation for commercial faming, the old ports, which had naturally grown over centuries, were destroyed. Since Independence, as the public and private sector investments have largely moved into the already developed parts of the country, these regional disparities have been further accentuated. These widening disparities eventually led the Central and State Governments to evolve a strategy for minimizing regional disparities in the late 1960s. Under this circumstance, the process of urbanization recorded a spurt during the 1970s' and also shown many special features. In this thesis, the general situation of the process of urbanization in the seventies is introduced, and the special features of the India's urbanization and the influence of the urbanization and the problems in the cities in the seventies are analyzed. Through examining the process of urbanization in the seventies, we can know the India' s urbanization better. The necessity of examining the India's urbanization arises from the fact that the process of urbanization in our country is in the fast-growing period, we can learn many from the India's urbanization.
