This thesis unearths the two decades' relation between Gorky and the Soviet regime and rethinks the status and role of the public intelligentsia and the Soviet's intelligentsia policies based on newly recovered archives, combining with other scholars' conclusions.Timing divides this thesis into four chapters. Chapter One introduces Gorky's thoughts, social actions and his interaction to Bolshevik. Gorky's ideology and social actions spurred his close coalition with Bolshevik in the Tsar far before 1917, when the Soviet regime was founded. Cleavage, however, appearing in 1908 interrupted their coalition mainly because of the dissension on culture and intelligentsia issues between Gorky and Lenin. That unbridgeable gap sowed seeds for the ensuing disputes.Chapter Two narrates the relation between Gorky and Bolshevik from around the October Revolution to 1921 's exile. Suspicions of the Revolution propelled him to criticize Bolshevik on Novaya Zbizn (New Life), which led to its termination. Gorky, facing political pressure and situation after revolution, chose cooperation with Bolshevik and focused his energy on protecting of culture strategically. The Soviet's toughing culture and intelligentsia policies refired Gorky inner controversy. These compelled Gorky to be exiled.Chapter Three describes years overseas spanning from 1921 to 1927. In the early time abroad, violent arguments between two sides continued. The death of Lenin made Gorky shift to a stance of favoring Bolshevik and resent to the gloating exiles and numb European cultural field. Besides, financial predicament and political embarrassment sprouted his return.Chapter Four ends with Gorky's returning home and his last seasons. Stalin stood out in the post-Lenin struggle within the Party. He roped in Gorky as his tool for a political consideration. During this period, Gorky once hesitated but political circumstances inside and outside welded with other causes led the way to Soviet and coalition with Stalin. Despite his final awareness of the Stalin system's deficiency, it's already his time to go away. The special social political causes and Gorky's split values together play as the director of histragedy. The special relationship between Gorky and the Soviet regime reflects a general logic between the Soviet regime and intelligentsia.
