Duanmu Hongliang is one of the best Manzu writers in the history of Chinese modern literature. In 1930's, he wrote three localism saga novels. The most famous one is "Ke'erqinqi Prairie", the other two are "Sea-like Mother Land" and "Great River". These three saga novels are worthy of chewing because of their profound thought and unique artistic value the writer put them. After careful reading and extensive researching, I figure out that these three saga navels have very close connection. Based on this finding, my thesis concentrates on the inner properties of the three as a whole. I try to figure out what is the profound thought in the novels and how the artistic value is reflected. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter depicts the background of Duanmu Hongling's family, education, social experience and the theme of his time when writing the novels. I also provide the background of the three novels respectively as considering the great importance for the background information in researching the work of a writer. So in this chapter you can find that the geographic and economic information of Northeast China and 1930's Chinese history is frequently mentioned. In the second chapter, the profound thought deep in the novels are taken to the careful argument. I arrange my argument with two contentions, first one is Duanmu Hongliang's eternal and incomparable love on his hometown Northeast China, the other is his extreme hatred on the aggressor Japanese who invaded China and did very notorious and inhuman massacre killing Chinese people in World War II. In this chapter, the author's patriotism is emphasized. The third chapter argues about the artistic features of Duanmu Hongliang's three localism saga novels, including its' vivifying typical Northeast China characters, fantastic "montage" technique in organizing the structure of the novels, and the skillful and agile Northeastern Chinese dialect extensively used in the text.
