This thesis aims to study Zhao Shuli' s literary creation and criticism history on him. Working on the basis of the study achievement in last 60 years and starting with the problem of Zhao' s position in literary criticism, we make a deep research into Zhao' s literary ideal as well as his encounters during creation process in order to derive inspiration and lessons for the creation and criticism of Chinese modern literary. The thesis basically consists of following three sections:Firstly, we retrospect the study history of Zhao' s literary creation from the beginning of 40' s to the end of 90' s in last century, which spans more than 60 years. We conclude that, if we set aside discrepancy among different appreciative attitudes, basic breakthrough in this period in the cognition of Zhao' s creation is very limited.Secondly, by studying his initial motive to literature, his value orientation in practice and his eventual abandonment of fictional style, we conclude that, in the meaning of self-recognition, Zhao is not really an author. To some extent, ignoring or arbitrarily understanding of this special status hampers further research into Zhao' s literary creation.Thirdly, the section aims to illustrate that Zhao' s understanding towards the world is a rational knowledge which is based on the criticism and re-selection of folk and modern literature. While transformed into literature pursuit, this particular view creates one kind of artistic possibility. In this sense, the significance of Zhao' s literary creation is not providing /he provided/ a text recognized by many reviewers but presenting one text having more possibilities of choice and thought. In artistic practice, Zhao lacks of intense consciousness to pursue an ideal art form, because he put his value standard upon realistic purpose. Moreover, he was restricted by various factors from social norms. All of these made him fail to express his unique understanding of the world in artistic style.Zhao' s success and failure bring the Chinese contemporary literature much more enlightenment and lessons. Only when we keep a critical attitude towards the value and the concept we selected, we can really overstep traditional culture, carry out the modern conversion in literary and create our independent value system.
