Expression Modes Of Possibility In Chinese

The expression of"possibility"in Chinese of this thesis refers to two kinds of modes: one is represented by words, including modal verbs, adverbs and so on; the other is represented by"possibility compliment". From semantic content, the"possibility"in this thesis refers to the semantics of possibility [dispossibility]. The thesis investigates the words and compliments which refer to"possibility"from the three levels of syntax, semantics and pragmatics, in order to find out some features and regularities in theory and practical application of the two expressions.The thesis includes six parts altogether. The first part is the introduction which includes the induction and summery of the research outcomes from the predecessors and puts forward the contents and research methods in this thesis.In the second part, ways of expressing"possibility"in Chinese are put forward: the words referring to"possibility"and"possibility compliments". The words referring to"possibility"in it are classified and ordered according to different extents to show the meanings of"possibility". At the same time, semantics showing possibility [dispossibility] of the two kinds of expressions are extracted.The third part investigates the two kinds of expressions from syntactic lay, and mainly investigates their functions to work as syntactic components and the features of patterns'juxtaposition and serical use.The fourth part investigates the two kinds of expressions from semantic lay, and mainly investigates their features of semantic reference and conditions to realize semantics. The fifth part investigates the two kinds of expressions from pragmatic lay, and mainly investigates their hearts and focuses of expression, selection of sentence types, interchange relations and some selection tendencies in practical language use.The sixth part is the conclusion part which concludes the syntactic features, semantic characters and features of pragmatic functions of the two kinds of expressions. At the same time, the necessity for further research has been pointed out.
